Welcome to The Huntsville Canoe Club!
|
The Huntsville Canoe Club is a group of people interested in paddling all
types of self-propelled craft - canoes, kayaks, and sit-on-tops - on a
variety of types of water. Members' skill levels and experience range from
newcomers to the sport to experts, and our preferred venues range from
local lakes to the wildest of white water.
HCC was founded in the early 1980's by a core of local paddlers primarily
from the Sierra Club, following in the footsteps of an earlier club, the
North Alabama River Runners Association. Over time, it has grown to its
current size of over 150 individuals and families. The major purpose of the club
is to provide a structure in which people can coordinate river trips, but
regular activities also include:
-
monthly meetings
-
a monthly newsletter, River Write
-
an annual swap meet at Ditto Landing
-
participation in the Flint River and Wheeler Wildlife Refuge clean-ups
-
support for the Mulberry Canoe and Kayak Races
-
spring pool sessions for roll practice
-
safety and trip leadership training.
HCC meets monthly, giving members and guests an opportunity to talk about
planned activities, to socialize, to get tips on paddling sports, to share
river stories and experiences, and to enjoy the company of others with
similar interests. Each meeting also includes a program, usually focusing
on paddling or environmental topics.
The club sponsors paddling opportunities for people of all skills, ranging
from lakes to Class IV whitewater. Favorite paddling sites include day-trips
on Southeast rivers, such as the Mulberry Fork, Locust Fork, Flint River,
Sipsey Fork, Town Creek, and a variety of creeks in north Alabama; the Hiwassee, Tellico,
and Ocoee in Tennessee; the Chattooga in north Georgia; and the Nantahala,
Pigeon, and French Broad in North Carolina. A series of week-day evening
trips is held on Wheeler Wildlife Refuge during the spring months. Over-night
and multi-day trips on rivers in Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, and Colorado
have been led in recent years as well. Camping trips are also enjoyed by
many members.
If you have an interest in being on the water, we would like to see
you at our next meeting. Even if you just have an interest in seeing that
our local waters remain available (and clean enough) for everyone to enjoy,
we'd like to see you. To really make some friends and have a good time,
join us on a trip!
